Tanimin vs Dentata
Arena: Partially Submerged City
Rules: None
Tanimin circled lazily in the deep pools where the park used to be. This once towering majesty of human engineering had been reduced to a few tall skyscrapers and so much rubble by whatever disaster had befallen it. The people had long since left or died, and no trace of other life could be found. All was silence, not even birds or the hum of insects could be heard. Tanimin had found himself in this strange place without an explanation. One moment, he had been asleep, the next, here. He had no idea what was going on. Confusion gave way to anger, however, as he thought of the many lives lost here. Someone…or something, had destroyed this place, and this angered Tanimin to no end. He would punish whatever had done this.
Meanwhile, a mass of rubbery flesh oozed silently forward on the ocean current, waving between buildings, and fanged pseudopods erupted to snap the air periodically. Dentata, the proverbial monster under the bed, a creature of nothing more than teeth and a digestive tract, had also found herself in this strange new world. But the surroundings made little difference to the beast. What mattered was food, and she had found a perfect source for that. Tanimin seemed oblivious to the monster’s approach.
Tanimin leapt from the water and landed atop a partially submerged building. Like a frog on a lily pad, he surveyed his surroundings. Then, he noticed a series of ripples in the water around him. His own internal alarms went off mere seconds before Dentata erupted from the deep, fanged maws lashing wildly. Tanimin shrieked in surprise and dove back into the water, as Dentata smashed the building to rubble. Tanimin wheeled about and sank his fangs into the passing beast, but the rubbery flesh yielded no blood. Confused, Tanimin bit down again, with the same results. Suddenly, a trio of fanged mouths appeared beside him, seeming to emerge straight from the flesh of this aberration. They clamped down on Tanimin’s arms, digging into the flesh and drawing forth streamers of blood. Tanimin bubbled in surprise, as a white-hot glow appeared in the back of his throat. His gills flashed once, as a beam of Ion energy erupted from his maw, driving Dentata away and scorching the flesh near the impact.
Dentata turned to face Tanimin, brining her massive fang-lined maw to bear. Tanimin, unable to face such a thing head on, flipped over in the water and hastily swam between the buildings, hoping to evade and study this creature. Dentata pursued with unnatural swiftness, but she was no match for the ion mutation in the water. Tanimin disappeared behind a building, as Dentata went rumbling past. More fanged tentacles extended from all over her body, snapping at empty air, but the fish was nowhere to be found.
Tanimin watched in silence, his own body camouflaged against the side of a building as no more than a chunk of rubble. Dentata’s rubbery body would mean that only hit and run tactics would probably work against it, as even his Ion Beam had failed to slow it down any. Tanimin slipped back under water and returned to the center of the city, where he lay in wait along the bottom. Presently, Dentata found her way back around, fangs still snapping at anything that happened to come in range. Tanimin waited until Dentata was heading towards him, then fired off a trio of bubbles, each one lazily breaking the surface and floating skyward ahead of Dentata’s approach. The fanged aberration paused momentarily, eyelessly watching the bubbles, before the trio exploded, showering their target with dangerous energy needles. Dentata roared as the needles penetrated her flesh, but nowhere near as much as Tanimin might have hoped for.
Dentata dove below the surface, going right after Tanimin. The ion mutant shrieked as Dentata plowed into him, fangs snapping shut on his scaly flesh. More blood escaped from the dozens of wounds all over the fish’ body, as more chunks of flesh disappeared down the monster’s gullet. Tanimin roared again as a white hot Ion Pulse covered his body, blasting free the fanged tentacles in a way that biting and clawing could not achieve. Blood flowed from the blackened stumps, which quickly disappeared back into the rubbery mass. Dentata pressed the assault, clamping down on Tanimin’s head with the primary mouth. The massive fangs dug into the flesh there with ease. But here was where Dentata had made a mistake. The barbs in Tanimin’s neck extended, driving their poisonous payload deep into the rubbery flesh.
Dentata recoiled as a burning, itching sensation covered her mouth, giving Tanimin room to flee. The ion fish dove deep, burrowing through the base of a large skyscraper and hiding in the little cave he had created, giving his wounds time to heal. His regeneration was fast, but somewhat hampered by the sheer number of bites. He waited until the blood had stopped flowing, and then burrowed through the rest of the building, creating a tunnel. Dentata was pursuing him, attracted by the blood flow, and soon, the mutation discovered the hole where Tanimin had been hiding, but there was no sign of its prey. Suddenly, an explosion above her caught her attention, as the building began to collapse, aided by Tanimin’s Ion Beam. Several thousand tons of concrete and steel collapsed on top of the monster, burying her beneath the rubble.
Tanimin watched from his perch a short distance away, but was dismayed to see the rubble rapidly shift, as Dentata oozed out from beneath the trap. More fanged mouths appeared and swiveled towards Tanimin, delivering a deadly acid payload at their target. Tanimin shrieked as the acid burned away at his flesh, leaving smoking holes in his hide. Dentata was not even fazed by having a building dropped on her head, or so it seemed, and rushed forward, sending waves crashing into the surrounding buildings. Tanimin leapt forward, landing on Dentata’ back, and began trying to rip the monster apart by hand. Suddenly, the flesh he gripped in his left had opened into a yawning maw, which swallowed Tanimin’s hand whole. The Ion mutant shrieked and fired an ion Beam at Dentata’ back, blasting free a chunk of flesh. But the wound quickly disappeared back into the rubbery mass, and more fanged tentacles erupted from all sides, threatening to tear Tanimin apart. Another white-hot Ion Pulse destroyed most of these, and Tanimin escaped again to nurse his wounds. Dentata, meanwhile, was growing furious. Her prey continued to elude its death, and now the rubbery mass plowed through more buildings, collapsing them around the central park area, with the intent of trapping Tanimin inside with nowhere to go.
But Tanimin was much further away, and watched in curiosity as Dentata created her own prison of sorts. His anger was great at this monster, both for attacking him without provocation, but for also destroying this city. None of his attacks seemed to affect this Lovecraftian nightmare, at least, not in any appreciable way. He needed a new plan of action. Perhaps this wall of toppled skyscrapers would provide a new method of assault. Tanimin leapt back into the water and approached the buildings. Inside, he could hear Dentata moaning and roaring as it fruitlessly searched for prey. Tanimin climbed, as silently as possible, over the side and perched atop this arena, watching his opponent circle endlessly. He fired a number of Ion Bubbles into the air, which burst above their target, raining deadly needles into the flesh of the beast. Dentata wheeled in the direction of the assault, and Tanimin leapt overhead, diving into the arena, behind Dentata.
Dentata whirled about, as Tanimin disappeared again, only to reappear atop a new building and repeat his assault. After a few rounds of this, the waters were frothy with Dentata’s blood, as even the rubbery menace could not keep up with the faster and more agile foe. But, even though it was a creature of fangs and flesh, its primitive brain did have one trick up its sleeve. The corpse of Dentata floated to the surface, blood pooling from open wounds. Tanimin watched from his perch, then fired an Ion Beam at the floating mass. The beam lanced into the creature’s side, but aside from scorching more flesh, the mass did not stir. Tanimin was cautious, but after several minutes of seeing a floating corpse, he became bolder, and moved in to investigate. He sniffed the corpse, and could not sense anything that indicated it was alive, and reached out to touch it.
Suddenly, fanged maws exploded from all sides, catching Tanimin off guard as they latched on with enormous strength. Tanimin howled in agony as the maws tore into his flanks, chest, and face. Blood stained the waters crimson as Dentata grasped her prey and began to swim, smashing Tanimin through the walls of the arena, sending splinters of concrete through the fish’s flesh. All the while, Dentata continued to bite more and more chunks of flesh loose from its catch. Tanimin screamed in agony, using his Ion Pulse to blast himself free for the third time, before diving deep and attempting to burrow through the building to escape. Dentata followed, and only through sheer dumb luck did Tanimin manage to escape being crushed, as Dentata smashed through the ruined skyscraper.
The battle continued outside the arena, with Tanimin fleeing and sniping at his foe with his Ion Beam, and Dentata pursuing relentlessly. Tanimin’s wounds were healing, but the damage was still taking its toll on him. His reactions were slowing, while no amount of damage seemed to be able to stop Dentata’s relentless advance. Acid sprayed from one of many tentacles landed on Tanimin’s shoulder, and the fish shrieked in agony as it burned through his flesh once again. Dentata put on an extra burst of speed, and soon overtook Tanimin, smashing him into the sides of a submerged building. The primary mouth opened wide as if to swallow Tanimin, who was weakened considerably now. However, the fish had a plan, the success of which would determine whether or not he escaped this hellish nightmare with his life.
Dentata roared as she swallowed Tanimin whole, the fish disappearing down her immense gullet in s single, clean bite. She prepared to move on as her stomach acids did their job, when suddenly, she began to feel less than stellar. Her body refused to respond, and began to bulge in an odd way. A toothy tentacle erupted from her flank and exploded in a wave of Ion energy and blood, as Tanimin unleashed another Ion Pulse from within her gullet. She tried in vain to disgorge her meal, but it was too late. Another wave of Ion energy blasted holes in her flank, as Tanimin destroyer her, piecemeal, one shot at a time. Soon, only a floating mass of tissue and blood remained of the aberration, as Tanimin fled the scene to nurse his wounds. One threat to this world was down, but there were still more to come.
