So, with the net probably getting shut off soon, and me evidently unable to open an account with TK, I’m going to put this suggestion here and let one of you guys put it on the suggestions board at your own leisure.
I’ve been giving some thought as to what can be done to help stem the flames, spam, and other problems that seem to plague the TK forums so much that you get cries for a crackdown every other month. And I think I’ve got a solution. This system has been implemented at another board I’m a member of, and it’s been working wonderfully for years.
Every member is given limited moderation powers. When someone makes a post, for 24 hours, it’s open to 10 moderation levels, four positives and 6 negatives:
POSITIVE
Important: When a post is important to the community, such as an announcement by another member or staff, you can give it this rating. Threads that contain Important posts are marked with an exclamation point on the main board
Insightful: A post that sheds light on a subject in a new way or just makes you think deserves this one. Insightful posts are marked with a star on the main board.
Informative: When a post is made that gives away info that you need, this moderation can be used. These are marked with a cross.
Funny: Pretty self-explanatory. Marked with a word bubble with a “HA!” inside it.
NEGATIVE
(Note about negative moderations. When a post is marked with a negative, it’s contents disappear. The post is still there, but it just contains a message letting you know it was negatively moderated. If the beginning post gets a negative, it’s cast down to the bottom of the page for good)
Spam: Pretty obvious. Marked with a can of spam
Whine: Again, obvious. Marked with a teardrop
FAQ: When a post is made that could easily be answered by the reading the rules, it gets this. Marked by a “FAQ OF DOOM” gif
Flame: Marked by a bit of fire.
Offensive: …You know, I can’t tell you what this one’s marked by, I don’t think we’ve ever had to use it.
Off-Topic: Marked by an “Off-topic” gif.
Another note about negative moderations: Only when the first post is negatively moderated will the post be marked on the board and of course sent to the bottom of the page.
All members will also have the ability to mark a post “mis-moderated” if you feel a post has received a moderation, good or bad, it doesn’t deserve. It takes 2 or 3 people to mark a post with the same moderation before it receives the mark.
So that’s how we roll at my favorite message board. Of course, this would probably require Arbok to overhaul some things, and he doesn’t seem like a guy with a ton of time on his hands. Still, might be worth a look.
